What is Link Popularity

// December 26th, 2007 // All Business

Most Webmasters, SEO specialists and Internet Marketers know; but does the “average Joe or Jill” know? Even if they did, would they really care? Of course, we’re talking about link popularity! What is link popularity anyway? Well, in its purest form, link popularity simply means, “how popular is your website link” on the Internet as far as major search engines are concerned.

Here’s a simple example. Let’s say that 2 similar websites (they don’t have to be similar, but for the sake of argument), both have excellent content, and around the same number of pages etc. Now let’s say that one of those websites has 500 “incoming links” from other websites around the Internet, and the other has just 10 – we would say that the first website has much greater “link popularity.”

Why is this important? Well, that can take awhile to explain, but suffice it to say… that the greater your website’s link popularity, the more likely that your website is an important resource, and therefore the more likely that the major search engines will take notice, and potentially increase your “visibility” in their indexes.

Please note: This is a very, very simplistic view of the concept of link popularity! For more information, and related resources, check out www.linkpopularity.ca.
