What are domain names?

This might seem like a “silly question.” Afterall, domain names have been around for a couple of decades now! Who could have predicted that “converting” a technical number (IP address) to a “more memorable and market-able” easy to remember “domain name” would create a multi-billion industry in a relatively few short years!

And, what an industry it is! You really would be shocked just to have a “glimpse” on the inside of what goes on in the “domaining” business. I’ve been “in it” myself for about 8 years (the last 5 really), and I’m shocked daily at the complexity and depth of something that basically costs about $10 to own for a whole year! It really is a bit “mind-blowing.”

P.S. I haven’t made my millions yet and retired to a very warm and sunny place; but then again “domaining” is more of a hobby and “gas money” thing for me. Of course, if I hit the big one with a domain name deal someday, I’ll let you know right away!
